Newsletter 11 - 16.2.10 (16/02/2010 @ 12:00:09)
Newsletter 15/02/2010
The big news item for this month is all to do with the food and accommodation we have arranged for you in July (when the sun will be shining). I am sure you will be excited to hear that we have managed the secure the services of Wilf’s Catering for the whole of our Lakeland 100 weekend. They will be running the kitchen at Race HQ from Friday morning through to Sunday afternoon and will offer a variety of veggie and meaty options from their outdoor menu.
We think they offer tremendous value for money and we strongly encourage competitors to save money by pre-purchasing their food online (it will be more expensive on the day). In coming weeks we will mail out details regarding how to purchase your food in advance by logging into the Sport-Ident website.
Coniston is a small town and has limited eating facilities so having food on site is a real bonus. Food will be available at all times but the main meals on offer will be a brunch on Friday, an evening meal for L50 competitors on Friday and a breakfast for L50 competitors an Saturday. When you reach the finish line, Wilf’s will also provide an end of race meal.. but that one’s on us..
2010 will see all the race facilities on one site. The John Ruskin School in Coniston offers parking, camping, showering and dining facilities and our L100 and L50 registration will also take place in the school. The space we have available also allows us to plan a number of pre-race events and our post-race service will be much enhanced from previous years … but more details of these in a forthcoming newsletter!
The first warning..!
For those of you completing the full 100 mile event, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of how tough the challenge is likely to be by stating a few facts:
- We anticipate a 60-70% drop out rate
- It is impossible to walk the full distance without being timed out
- If you are not an experienced and competent navigator you are likely to fail
- If you have not completed several ultra events already, you are likely to fail
- If any of the above apply to you, you could put your life in danger
Without the correct experience, conditioning and preparation you should not stand on the start line for the 100 mile event. The 50 mile event is double the standard marathon distance over mountain terrain with over 9000 feet of climbing and descending!!
If you have entered the 100 and you are in any doubt with regards to your ability level, change to the 50 mile event, enjoy the challenge of a lifetime, live to fight another day and come back next year to tackle the 100.
Newsletter 10 - 16.1.10 (14/01/2010 @ 16:20:58)
A Happy New Year to you all and here's looking forward to the best event on your new calendar!
Entries for the Lakeland 100 and the Lakeland 50 have been arriving in a steady stream since entries were opened in October. We already have in excess of 200 competitors signed up for an event that is still six months away - a significant increase in numbers from the same time last year. For the first time, we are expecting the event to be full prior to the closing date
Preparations for July are going according to plan and all of our checkpoints are confirmed. Two more checkpoints will be undercover this year. We will be using the Village Hall in Buttermere rather than a tepee on the track and we will have the shelter and amenities of a barn at Wasdale Head. Details of the 2010 checkpoints have now been uploaded to the Competitor Area for you to have a look at and each checkpoint card gives some basic information about distance covered and the route stats to the next checkpoint. There is a lot more to be added to the competitor area and we will keep you informed..
A number of competitors have taken up the offer of purchasing a 2009 route map to help them with their planning and preparation for 2010. We have 30 of these maps and a few roadbooks for the 100 and the 50 and these are available on a first come first served basis until the stock runs out. No formal recce sessions are planned this year but if you keep an eye on the Forum you may well find others who are planning recces over the coming months. To purchase a map email info@lakeland100.com
Finally, we would like to welcome our latest team member, Dr Paul Simpson. Paul is a GP based in Kendal and he will be heading up medical support for this year's event. Paul will have a team of helpers who will be poised at the finish line to carry you away and monitor your vital signs!!

Entries for the 2010 event were due to be open from 1st September 2009 but due to some logistical issues regarding the start location we need to delay this process until arrangements have been made and bookings are secure. Please bear with us, we are aiming to open entries by mid September.
Results 2009 Event (04/08/2009 @ 09:02:29)
The results are now available from the results section (left hand menu), they are currently missing the age categories and this will be updated shortly. Thaks to everyone who took part and made it such a great weekend, I feel that the weather has to shine on us next year..
Newsletter 9 (20/06/2009 @ 13:06:39)
Welcome to Lakeland 100 Newsletter 9, in this issue:
1. Who's entered so far?
2. Race information
3. Guinea pigs still needed!
4. Camping and parking over the weekend
5. A racer's review of the 100
1. A list of competitors is now available from the website, go to www.lakeland100.com and follow the link on the left menu to entries 2009 to download the full list. If you wish to change category please let us know well in advance so we can make adjustments.
2. There are a few changes to the race information, we will be using Coniston primary school for registration as opposed to the sports and social club. The primary school is 5 minutes walk from your camping, the same location will also be used for the ultra running conference. Please check the competitor area for more details.
3. Researchers from Liverpoool John Moores University have had lots of support from 100 mile runners but they still need 50 mile runners for their research, please see details below:
The Research Institute of Sport and Exercise Science from
Liverpool
John
Moores
University are recruiting male runners (age range 18-60) who are competing in either the
Lakeland 50 or 100 mile race, to take part in a research study investigating the impact of prolonged endurance exercise on heart function. The study is entirely voluntary and we would require participants to be available for just 30 minutes before the event (located at the registration site - Marquee), and for approximately 20 minutes on completion of the event (same venue). Before and after the event, a short echocardiography scan (ultrasound image of the heart) and small blood sample (5ml for markers of cardiac damage) as well as height, weight and blood pressure will be taken. A short health and exercise training questionnaire will also be given before the event. A full report of individual feedback will be sent to each participant with information on heart structure and function, and the application to your health and fitness. You can download a participant information sheet from HERE.
If you are interested in taking part, please contact Christopher George
C.George@2005.ljmu.ac.uk

Many Thanks
4. Camping and parking will be provided over the weekend and you will be allowed 1 car and 1 tent per person competing. If you bring your family and have a family tent we are more than happy to accommodate them but if you bring other support in separate cars and tents they will need to use other sites. At registration you will be given a parking and camping pass for your car and tent, these should be on display at all times. There are other campsites close by for your supporters, it would be unfair for us to allow more than one car / tent if this resulted in actual competitors not having parking or camping space available.

3. You will already be aware that this year Harveys will be producing a special event map based on their 1:40,000 BMC map of the lakes. The route and checkpoints will be pre-marked on the map. If you prefer to use OS map you have the option of downloading the pdf from the competitor area and laminating the various sheets or purchasing your own OS maps. The road map will be separate to the map and printed on waterproof paper, we had originally intended to incorporate the road book into the map but any last minute emergency changes to the road books would be impossible once the maps have been printed. PLEASE NOTE that the slight route changes from the 2008 event format have been incorporated onto the road books and maps which are downloadable from the competitor area.

UTMB qualification - points awarded to Lakeland100 (09/11/2008 @ 17:12:29)
Good news..
Confirmation has been received that the UTMB have awarded 4 points for completion of the Lakeland100 and 2 points for completion of the Lakeland50. This can be backdated to the 2008 event so if you are attempting to qualify for the 2009 UTMB and need the points, you are safe! Apologies it took so long to secure the points but I understand that the UTMB organisers have been extremely busy in recent months. If you are hoping to qualify for 2009 UTMB may I take this opportunity to wish you the best of luck.. should your application not be successful.. I hear there is a great race in the Lakes July 31st – August 2nd at which you would be most welcome!
Newsletter 5 (24/10/2008 @ 15:46:16)
1. Entries already open
2. Changes to the route
3. Recce days
4. UTMB points
5. Forum
1. Entries are now open and we have already taken a considerable number for 2009, which is a great boost for the organising team. We fully intend to move up a gear for 2009 and make it a bigger and better experience for everyone involved. We have confirmed many of the checkpoints and marshals for 2009 and we are hoping to confirm the weather by next week.. no guarantees
2. There are some minor changes to the route with a section being removed from Leg 1 of the 100 course, making Coniston to Seathwaite slightly shorter. This compensates for the additional distance created by the 2009 course deviation to Dalemain Country Estate. This will be the drop point for 100 competitors and will also be the new start point for the 50 mile course. Dalemain is a great location and with ample parking there will be plenty of room and activities for friends and family. For more information regarding Dalemain go to www.Dalemain.com
3. We have several recce days planned, the first will take place on December 7th and will cover the route from Dalemain to Mardale. Those people attending the recce day will meet at Mardale and leave cars before being transported to Dalemain for the start of the run. The recce days cost £12 each which is used to hire a coach for transportation to the start and also to cover the cost of maps for each person. The route planners will take part in the recce days and will be there to advise you in any way possible. The purpose of the recce days is for you to meet others who are competing and enjoy a long day out on the course. For more information relating to the recce days please go HERE
4. We have contacted organisers of the UTMB and we are still confident that we will be awarded points for the 2008 Lakeland100 event. If you intend to enter the 2009 UTMB and you are relying upon the Lakeland100, we will do everything possible to ensure that points are allocated before entry opens for 2009.
5. Finally.. the forum for Lakeland100 has recently been moved to HERE please feel free to log in and ask any questions.

Who you running for?? (21/08/2008 @ 14:52:39)
Special kids in the UK are our designated charity and a percentage of each entry goes to this cause. If you are running, why not get a few friends to sponsor you for the 2009 event? If we have 400 runners and everyone raised just £10 we would raise an additional £4000 to add to the initial donation... sponsor forms will be on the site soon so please consider www.specialkidsintheUK.org
